Wrestling has remained a part of his life since the first day he went on the mats at his high school in Salem. After finishing his competitive wrestling career at Virginia Tech, Mr. Wells has remained active in many aspects of Virginia wrestling. He has refereed in the Roanoke Valley, Northern Virginia and Charlottesville referee Associations.
In 1995/96, he was the assistant wrestling coach of the Culpeper Youth Wrestling Club before becoming the club's head coach in 1997, where he remained until last year. During these last two years as the club's head coach, the program grew from 20 to 65 wrestlers. Mr. Wells co-started an out-of-season wrestling league with teams from Culpeper, Louisa, Orange and Albermarle counties.
He was instrumental in integrating this program with the Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Association's National tournament. His efforts increased the regional medal . winners from two in 1997 to five in 1998 and to 11 in 1999. He produced five national place finishers in the same period. In 1999, Mr. Wells also was the head coach of the Culpeper middle school's wrestling program and served as an assistant varsity coach at Culpeper High
