Once you have finished this step remove the feeder from the water and let it completely dry before refilling with fresh seed. It is recommended that you wear rubber gloves while cleaning your feeders.
You can also reduce the spread of diseases at your feeders by preventing the birds from being over-crowded. This can be accomplished by placing your feeders in pairs about 10 feet apart. Use just enough bird feed to last your birds for a couple of days.
Discard any bird food that smells funny, is wet, looks moldy or has anything growing on it. Keep any animals like squirrels and mice out of your bird feed, both in the feeders and during storage. Their droppings can cause some diseases.
