In the former, a young girl leans over a book, handling a small bird, utterly absorbed in her contemplations. The patterns of shadow across chairs, curtain, table and the rhythm of bird cage bars and lines of text in the open book form an almost musical visual composition. A still point in a summer afternoon is the music’s theme, formed by notes and scales of naples yellow, lavender, pinks, orange and the odd green curtain as the observer looks down into this child’s world.
