This year there are a large number of these plants in my garden in two locations. Previously, I’d sown the seeds directly. Germination was much more successful starting the plants indoors.
Nearly two weeks ago, I spotted signs of munching on the bloodflower’s leaves. Looking more carefully, I saw teeny black, green and white striped caterpillars, all with a pair of black filaments at each end-monarchs!
Each patch of tropical milkweed has hosted a group of the larvae, with the first group moving on the pupal stage, forming a jade green case with molten gold spots. They should emerge soon as mature butterflies. This takes two weeks.
