The race has come a long way since its inception. It was the brainchild of Galley Smith, son of the late former deputy clerk Eva L. Smith, according to Circuit Court Clerk Diane Bruce.
During an autumn visit from Oklahoma, Mr. Smith ran from his mother’s Flint Hill home to Washington, arrived in the Clerk’s Office and declared that there should be a 10K race along the Fodderstack Road.
Ms. Bruce took the idea and literally ran with it, gathering a core group of local residents to plan and organize the first event in April 1978.
This year’s race will begin as usual at the north end of Flint Hill on Route 522 at The Warehouse and end at the courthouse in Little Washington, via the very hilly Fodderstack Road.
It is sponsored by the Inn at Little Washington which also is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
This year’s event also features TV Channel 4’s weatherman and Rappahannock weekend resident Bob Ryan who will serve as Grand Marshall of the race, said Mr. McCarthy, who chairs the Recreational Facilities Authority which benefits from race proceeds.
