is the fact that most people will move out of the way, even though they know in their heart of hearts that squirrels do not eat people — probably, although they’ll eat just about anything else.

While many, suburbanites in particular, loathe squirrels t “tree rats” to some) for their cockiness and thievery, I have to say I admire these rodents for their toughness and adaptability.

Anyone who can weather more than a mild wind in a drey (those frail-looking bundles of leaves in trees that squirrels use as temporary nests until they can find a suitable tree cavity) is due some respect, in my book.

I also admire how squirrels take as a challenge baffles and other human follies designed to deter them from pillaging bird feeders.

The other strategy for keeping squirrels from bird feeders — chasing them away — is truly pointless.
