Sow in the
refrigerator
Cold-stratifying can also be done in the refrigerator. Either sow seeds in a zip-lock bag with moist sphagnum moss or growing soil or, if you’ve room, in pots and flats covered with plastic. Even damp paper towels in plastic bags may work. Check often for mold. If your seeds do get moldy, air them out a day and replant, leaving the bag or covering slightly open.
Vernalization, the sneaky process of tricking plants into i thinking they’ve already experienced a first summer and winter is the method I use to grow artichokes from seed. “Imperial Star”, the variety bred to be grown as an annual works well, but so do the more commonly biennial Italian varieties, including the beautiful “Violetto”.
