Do residents of Rappahannock County work here or outside the county? Do residents of other counties commute to Rappahannock to work? And how do the data on employment compare to that of neighboring counties?
More than 43 percent of Rappahannock County residents who are employed work in the county, according to an analysis of recently released data on the 2000 U. S. Census. This percentage is similar to Madison,Warren and Fauquier counties but is higher for Culpeper and Page counties.
Surprisingly, many people who work in Rappahannock County do not live here but commute into the county to work.
Although 44.3 percent of all people who work in Rappahannock County live in the county, there are considerable numbers of people who commute from the Washington, D.C. suburbs to work in the county.
For instance, nearly 20 percent who work here commute from Fairfax County and another 15 percent commute here from Arlington County and Alexandria.
Many others commute into the county from neighboring counties, the most coming from Warren County.
For those residents of Rappahannock County who are employed, 43.3 percent work in the county. Most others commute to work in nearby counties and cities.
The average commuting time for Rappahannock residents is 38.7 minutes, which is similar to that of workers in our surrounding counties.
