Glorious weather and an enthusiastic crowd made for an enjoyable International Festival at the Rappahannock County High School last month.
The afternoon air was filled with the aroma of grilled Swiss sausage, authentic Mexican tamales, Thai eggrolls, Turkish falafel and baklava and other delicious treats at the April 27 event. It was possible to eat your way around the world.
The air was also filled with the sounds of world music. From Scottish ballads to Middle Eastern dance music to Brazilian rhythms to African talking drums to Irish jigs and Chinese musicians, the festival had it all.
Children and parents bargained for souvenirs under the international bazaar tent, learned how to wrap a sari, watched Chinese calligraphy in action, and participated in the Singing Tree art project.
The festival was made possible by the Headwaters’ Global Spotlights Committee. Global Spotlights brought several speakers with international experience into the schools this year and will continue to do so next year.
Headwaters, the Rappahannock County Public Education Foundation, is a non-profit organization established by local volunteers to provide support to county public schools.
Its mission is “to foster educational excellence by cultivating the cooperative spirit and resources of the whole community to benefit all students.”
Proceeds from the festival will go to support ongoing Headwaters’ programs in the schools.
