startled in the middle of saddling by having a Black Rat Snake drop down from the rafters above. They’re incredible climbers, often going up trees after birds and their eggs. Although I can’t say having snakes falling from above is an altogether pleasant experience, I did appreciate their role in the bam micro-ecosystem and just tried to keep an eye peeled on the rafters when tacking up.
