The five members of the Board of Supervisors were generally in accord with the school budget as presented in County Administrator John McCarthy’s draft county budget for FY 2004.
But there was a continued call by McCarthy and board members for a significant reduction of the administrative costs of Rappahannock public schools.
McCarthy said that according to reports of Virginia's Auditor of Public Accounts, Rappahannock public schools had the second highest administrative cost in Virginia in 2002.
"Consistently, this number is very, very, high. . . . It’s becoming such an issue, it's detracting from the mission," McCarthy said.
He offered the assistance of his office to help reduce schools' administrative costs and, despite the unanimous approval of a slightly reduced school budget, board members expressed their collective agreement that administrative costs must be significantly reduced in the near future.
