Two-vehicle
accident ends
in suicide
The Virginia State Police are investigating an automobile accident and subsequent suicide that occurred on May 15.
According to police reports, the state police and the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident on Route 630, approximately 50 feet east of Route 628 in the Huntly area of Rappahannock.
At the scene, law enforcement officials determined that Page County resident Michael Scott Jones, 28, was traveling eastbound on Route 628 when his 1976 GMC pickup collided head on with Flint Hill resident Ralph Spencer Markee’s 1998 Chevy pickup. The collision caused Markee’s vehicle to run off the road.
“The other driver (Markee) was unconscious,” First Sgt. Ed Murphy of state police said. “A car driving by the accident witnessed Mr. Jones in his car putting a gun to his head and shooting himself.”
An autopsy confirmed that Jones died on the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Tbxicology test results are still pending.
Markee, 62, was transported to Fauquier Hospital with soft tissue damage and was released later.
Murphy said that during the investigation Law enforcement officials learned that at the time of the accident, Jones was dealing with numerous family problems.
