The first division leader received the ground control steers to K-2, and led his four planes to the airfield. They broke through the overcast skies and landed at 6:48 p.m.
Maj. R. Earl DeMers, leader of VMF-115’s third division, reported that he was having problems with his ADF radio, and that his four aircraft of his division were joining the remaining two planes of the second division, led by 2nd Lt. Carl R. LaFleur.
In addition to DeMers and LaFleur, the combined flight consisted of Maj. Donald F. Givens, 1st Lt. Alvin R. Bourgeois, 2nd Lt. John W. Hill Jr., and 2nd Lt. Richard L. Roth.
The six pilots of the second and third divisions reported their fuel condition as they approached K-2, but contact was not made again.
It would be nearly two agonizing days before their fate was known.
