tor the fourth year in a row, it rained on Rappahannock's annual Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society which raised $50,000,
The Relay took place as scheduled Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. May 17-18 at the Rappahannock Elementary School.
It rained lightly and it rained heavily throughout the event but nothing dampened the enthusiasm of the walkers, most of whom were prepared for the cold and the rain.
Opening ceremonies began with the Star Spangled Banner. Chairman Ben Atkins introduced the Relay chairmen and team captains and the Rev. Jon Heddelston delivered a prayer of gratitude for God’s blessings and for the occasion and the participants.
Ben “Cooter” Jones gave a brief talk, after which there followed a tribute to Ester Settle, one of the Relay’s major supporters who is currently fighting cancer.
There was a brief ceremony in honor of the cancer survivors who then began the Relay by walking the first lap. The survivors carried purple “Relay" balloons and released them as they completed the circuit.
