The incident involving the six lost “Able Eagles” occurred on the evening of Sept. 10, 1952.
“Mission 3303” was the last action of the day. The flight was made up of 24 Marine F9F-4 Panthers — 12 from VMF-115 and 12 from its sister squadron, VMF-311. Their target was a Chinese Communist troop and supply area in the Sariwon region of North Korea, about 250 air miles from K-3.
The flight had problems soon after the launch commenced at 5:30 p.m. Two pilots in the second division — including the division leader and the number four man — could not get airborne due to mechanical problems.
The actual strike into North Korea was successful, and the 22 aircraft headed back to K-3 while it was still daylight. However, unfavorable weather conditions closed in on K-3, prompting Marine Air Group operations to
