The Washington Tbwn Council has unanimously approved a Special Use application for the Rappahannock National Bank building that will allow retail sales in an area greater than 1,000 square feet.
Retail use of up to 1,000 square feet is permitted “by right” in the Tbwn of Washington.
Building owner and attorney Sharon Luke briefed the council at its June 11 meeting on plans she and her husband, County Attorney Peter Luke, have for the building once, the bank has moved to its new location on Route 211 in early September.
Luke said they are not requesting any exterior changes and will continue to lease the second floor space for business and professional office use, but wish to lease the first floor’s 1100 to 1200 usable square feet to one or more retail operations.
The retail uses requested for the ground level include: art gallery, book store, independent furniture store, tailor shop, jewelry shop, antique store, gift shop, and drug store/pharmacy.
Luke noted that they have imposed restrictions on prospective tenants that include hours of operation, lighting and prohibitions on external speakers and internal amplified sound.
She said that she and her husband are requesting uses that are the same or similar to others in the area, and so proposed activities in the building will be compatible.
