For many hikers on the “Coaster” several stream crossings and two hostels along the difficult route offer rest and respite for the weary.
Thru-hiker Bob Eaheart of Springfield stopped at Bear’s Den Hostel on Monday for a lunch break and and a pint of ice cream. He's already hiked nearly 1,000 miles of trail that begins on,Springer Mountain, Ga., and ends atop Mount Katahdin. Maine.
“Wet,” he said of his experience so far. "Yon can’t get to Maine if you don’t hike in the rain.”
In March, Eaheart retired from 20 years of civilian work with the U.S. Marine Corps in Quantico and decided to fulfill the hiking dream he’s had since he was a teen. He’s lost 13 pounds since starting in May, and his main concern is not losing too much weight.
Eaheart is about 120 miles from the halfway point of the trail at Prince Grove Furnace. Pa., where hikers encounter “The Half-Gallon Challenge,” an ice cream eating tradition i store beside the trail.
