She's a wife, a mother, a doll collector and a preschool teacher, but now she’s also Gainesville's newest celebrity.
Kristina Deignan, 31, was crowned Mrs. Virginia 2003 on June 15 at the Mrs. Virginia pageant in Lynchburg.
“It was one of the most wonderful experiences I’ve had in a long time, and I must say, the camaraderie of all the women together made it even more special." said Deignan. owner of the Kristina Care day care center in Gainesville.
Deignan was one of six contestants chosen from a stack of applications sent in by women from around the state.
On June 14, each contestant met with three judges for a 10-minute interview session. Deignan was asked about her hobby, collecting Barbie dolls.
Her answer? “It’s a very extensive collection of Barbies that are still in the boxes. God has blessed me with a boy so the Barbies will stay in the box and they will stay in mint condition,” she recalled.
At Sunday’s pageant, Deignan was asked other questions, including, “How' do you define success in your family, business and yourself?"
The Gainesville mother responded that success in her family is reached “when everyone is happy and the house is clean.”
In her day care and preschool business, success means that pupils are happy and the parents continue to enroll their children.
And in herself?
“When at the end of the day I can look at myself in the mirror and say to myself, ‘today was a good day,’ “ she said.
Later in the evening, Deignan won the swimsuit competition in a classic white one-piece halter-top bathing suit.
“For me to win (the swimsuit competition) was just a compliment and a shock,” she said. “I thought, ‘I guess I can’t
