over the past two years, the order was driven to mount arms and shoot without warning into the windows.
Shots crashed through the wavy glassed panes of the dining room window. Captain Mosby jerked backwards with a muffled groan and slumped forward in his chair. As he crumpled to the floor bleeding from a wound four inches to the left of his navel, Sarah Ludwell grabbed the closest bandage material at hand, her own bonnet, and gave it to the stricken leader.
Now seriously wounded, Mosby, and everyone in the room, had one worried thought: How would he escape capture this time?
Today, one man knows the rest of this fascinating story better than any other and that is the great-great-grandson of Ludwell Lake, John K. Gott.
And even more surprising, Gott retains two of the artifacts from this incident: the bloodstained bonnet of Sarah Lake and the entire six-pane dining room window sash with two bullet holes in it.
