Tuition and fees for outof-state students will grow from $202.47 to $211.03 per credit — an increase of 4.2 percent. Summer session prices will remain at their current levels until the fall.
Ebb and flow
The history of Virginia's tuition rates over the last decade or so can probably be best described as a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows.
In-state undergraduates saw their tuition rise at a fast clip in the early part of the 1990s. Tuition increases in 1994 were plugged at 3 percent, and. from 19961998, tuition was frozen.
Students received a substantial break in fiscal year 2000. when tuition rates were rolled back 20 percent and then frozen yet again from 2000 to 2002.
With the recently announced increases, tuition now is about what it was in 1997.
Because of recent boorhand-bust economic cycles, many recent graduates paid substantially less for their education than other students who attended the same school a few years earlier or a couple of years afterward.
“In 2000, you had a situation in which seniors paid less (in their final year) than in their freshman year,” said Dan Hix, acting finance and policy director of the State Council of Higher Education.
