Anyone charged with driving under the influence will now face a $250 fine for the first offense, $500 for the second and $1,000 for a third or subsequent offense.
In addition, the new law carries a mandatory five-day jail sentence for anyone convicted of driving under the influence with a passenger who is 17 years old or younger.
The new laws also target juveniles convicted of underage drinking and driving, by imposing an automatic driver’s license suspension for those with a blood alcohol level of .02 or higher.
