Blame it on the heat and humidity. “It was too hot to eat,” said Roger Roach, chief of the Washington Volunteer Fire Department. The fire chief was referring to the slow food sales during the Fourth of July festivities at Washington. Food sales from the firemen’s booth during that weekend account for as much as 25 percent of the fire department’s budget. '' Roach was hoping for sales of about $18,000 bubthe actual amount was closer to $14,000. The heat didn’t stop the many activities, including^origs by Ann Carroll, two performances by the Trapezoids, a bicycle parade with Uncle Sam and horse-drawn * -'wagon rides to the library’s book sale. Chrissy Weakley, Sperryville, was named Miss Independence, with Naomi Smoot runner-up. "
