Nighthawks dived down after the insects the lights attracted.
“Nighthawk” was also the term used for the hand who would babysit the cows at night during a cattle drive, often singing to them to keep them quiet. I had seen plenty of the birds and had been on enough drives that the name had a lot of resonance for me and, I hoped, for our Wyoming clients.
The Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor* the bird is in the “goatsucker” familv-not a particularly nice moniker that came from the misplaced notion that these birds sucked the milk from goats.
How that myth got started is hard to imagine. The family, which has 70 species around the world, is also called “nightjar.” Whip-or-Wills, another Virginia native that is more often heard than seen, also belong to the family.
