The Virginia General Assembly convened Wednesday for a tax and 'budget battle that will see Rappahannock legislators taking on Democratic Gov. Mark Warner’s tax reform proposal.
Shortly before Christmas, Warner delivered a tax reform package calling for increasing the sales tax from 4.5 percent to 5.5 percent; increasing the tobacco tax from 2.5 cents per pack to 25 cents and raising income taxes on Virginians who earn more than $100,000 a year. The tobacco changes would allow county and local taxes to go even higher.
