It isn’t that Koro comes or that he doesn’t come, but that something else altogether happens. Something in a larger and more significant scale, that brings together all of the themes of the film into a magnificent final sequence.
According to film critic, Roger Ebert, “It’s not just an uplifting ending, but a transcendent one, inspired and inspiring, and we realize how special this movie really is. This film, like its heroine, dares to dream.”
Although director Niki Caro expresses the grandeur of her themes in majestic widescreen images, she avoids overinflation and cloudy mysticism, keeping the film firmly focused on the heartrending conflict between the determined girl and her obstinate grandfather.
The film’s authenticity has won the wholehearted approval of the Maori community, but its insightful handling of such universal themes as generational conflict and the yearning for meaningful spiritual values has also struck a deep chord with audiences everywhere.
“Whale Rider” is rated PG-13 and contains some obscenity and a momentary drug reference. Run time is 101 minutes.
