Chappell said practice is the key to the kind of championship teams Rappahannock wants. The gym would provide space for recreation league basketball play.
There are several additional proposals that might be funded if the bids come in below budget or by community donations.
• The track and field contract does not include bleachers, paving lots and installation of lights. The board estimated the cost of bleachers and lights for the track, football and soccer field and paving would be $478,431 and might be paid for by the community since it will allow for physical fitness activities when the students are not using the areas.
• The board said a 1,600 foot “fitness center" at the gym at the elementary school would cost $133,000. The center would serve all students and members of the community as well. It would provide a place for fitness equipment given to the county under the “PEP” grant and a place for youngsters to go until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
The board set aside $132,515.55 in its estimate for contingencies and architect/engineering and survey fees were $203,265.
In other action at the board meeting parents from several parts of the county came to urge the board to hire another music teacher to assist Lynn Fournier.
