Washington psychiatrist
William Hurlbert Young, Jr, died at the age of 83 from pneumonia on Jan. 8 in Fauquier Memorial Hospital. Eight years ago, he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke from which he never fully recovered. At the time of his death, he was living in the Tbwn of Washington.
He was bom on June 1,1920 in Newton, Mass. In 1934, his family moved to Elgin, 111., where in 1938 he graduated with academic and athletic honors from Elgin Academy. In 1942, Dr. Young graduated with a degree in history from Harvard College in Cambridge, Mass. In 1945, he graduated from the University of Michigan School of Medicine in Ann Arbor, Mich. He then completed his internship at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Afterwards, he entered the U.S. Army as captain in the Medical Corps. There he served as an MD on ships bringing home overseas personnel and their families.
After the. war, Dr. Young trained in psychiatry at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, The Washington School of Psychiatry, The Washington Psychoanalytic Institute, and the Austen Rigg Center (Stockbridge, Mass.).
