The sheriff’s office received some 5,000 telephone calls last year including some 1,000 calling for fire or rescue, the sheriff said.
Sherertz said he has “hinted to the powers that be that some capital funds may be needed to create a dispatch center," to relieve the crowding in the sheriff’s building.
“I think our dispatchers do an outstanding job,” Sherertz said in the interview. “It is one of the hardest jobs in the sheriff’s office.”
He said his office is in “total concert (with fire officials) in the need for training” and he is going to review the curriculum at the police academy to see if it is adequate on fire and rescue issues. He said that dispatchers must “constantly train” to keep up with changes in the community and techniques.
