Carter acknowledged in an interview that Sherertz is not legally responsible for the emergency calls, only that the Board of Supervisors must provide fire and rescue call service and that it was given to the sheriff to carry out. Carter, who is a paid fireman in Prince William County, said larger- counties have separate fire a£d rescue and law enforcement dispatchers.
County administrator John McCarthy said that the number of emergency calls in Rappahannock does not justify a separate system. McCarthy said that often for hours, particularly at night, the sheriff s office gets no emergency calls.
“I’m terribly sympathetic with the dispatchers. It is like all emergency and law enforcement personnel; often they’re doing nothing for hours and then suddenly face 25 minutes of concentrated terror,” said McCarthy.
