his daughter practice. “Mentally, fencing is very demanding. The action is so fast you have to concentrate on every ‘touch.’ There are only six to eight seconds between the time the referee calls ‘ready fence’ and the ‘touch,’ and the point is scored within the first four or five seconds. In a bout, it is either win or go home.”

Further, says her coach and Master Fencer, Alexandre Ryjik, “Fencing today is like a physical game of chess where competitors can make any number of moves within a standard set of moves. Athletic ability has much to do with a person’s success in the sport, but it’s your ability to figure out in advance what your opponent is going to do that counts most.”

Ryjik concludes, “Even if you’re not athletic but concentrate your mind, you can win.”
