An individual may begin at either the First Responder or EMT level with training in basic skills. Each succeeding higherlevel program reinforces these basic skills and adds specific additional lifesaving techniques at the advanced life support level, such as medication administration and cardiac monitoring.
Tlie EMT Intermediate and Paramedic training must be taught in Virginia by sites that have received accreditation. Site accreditation is not required for the lower, basic level programs.
The Rappahannock EMS Council's Intermediate accreditation verifies its adherence to the state’s accreditation standards that include program management and practice, financial stability, clinical resources, medical direction, and student outcomes.
To obtain accreditation, an EMT Intermediate program must complete a self-study that includes a site visit by peer reviewers who conduct interviews with program personnel and tour clinical sites and other key areas of the program.
