At its meeting April 6, the ladies auxiliary to the Washington Fire Company elected a new president, Mrs. Virginia Estes and Vice President Mrs. Edward Clark. Miss Mary Miller Wood retained the office of secretary and Mrs. Marietta Cheatham remained as treasurer of the group.
A 175-year-old frame house on the farm of Wade H. Massie III at Massie Corner was completely destroyed by fire Saturday night. The house was rented to Mr. and Mrs. Hugh . Grigsby and only Mr. Grigsby was at home when the blaze was discovered. He said the fire started in a back room and quickly engulfed the whole structure. The Grigsby family lost all their possessions in the fire except the clothing they had on and a washing machine which was on the porch.
No candidates have filed for the office of 1 mayor or for council seats in the Town of Washington for the upcoming election in June. Mrs. Dorothy C. Davis, present mayor, stated that she would accept the office if elected and after discussing it at the council meeting Tuesday night. All the present council women agreed to serve if elected.
