Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Bloomer presented the 1979-1980 school budget and plans for school expansion to a noncommittal board of supervisors at Thursday’s meeting. Budget questions focused on services to the handicapped, underground gasoline storage tanks and fuel costs for the coming year. At Bloomer’s request, the board unanimously approved the teacher salary scale with a seven percent group increase over last year’s schedule and an addition of a 15th step at the top of the scale.

In just his second try over timber, Edge Hill Squire made the most of 10-pound weight allowance and a strong ride by professional jockey Patrick Cooney to win the novice timber feature at the April 9 Old Dominion Hounds Point-to-Point. A capacity crowd of more than 3,000 poured into Ben Venue Farm gates on a sunny Saturday. Racegoers were privy to some of the spring’s finest competition yet, with no less than 11 races taking place.
