Wakefield Country Day School in Flint Hill has instituted a new program, “Athlete of the Month,” which recognizes a boy and girl who not only have distinguished themselves athletically but also have displayed leadership skills and good sportsmanship.
Allison Russo, a sophomore from Flint Hill, won the award for outstanding female athlete for March. She is a key player on the girls’ varsity soccer team, which compiled a 4-2 record in March. Allison scored three goals and was a key element during the Owls four-game winning streak that produced three consecutive shut-outs over Randolph-Macon Academy, Rappahannock County High School, and Fresta Valley. The Owls current ranking is 4-2 in the Delaney Athletic Conference.
Kevin Riedel, a freshman from Washington was singled out as March’s outstanding male athlete for March. Kevin not only participates in cross-country, but also he has proven to be invaluable to the athletic department in general. Kevin recently spearheaded a drive which allowed the school to purchase much needed equipment. He started a program in which the cross-country team sells popcorn at home basketball games, and it is being expanded to provide concessions at the spring soccer matches.
