The Tuesday vote broke the tax logjam, and now the Richmond government knows how much money it will have. They will vote separately on how to parcel out the new income, and a budget bill could be on Warner’s desk by early next week.
At a public hearing last Monday, McCarthy estimated that fully funding the $10.4 million school budget request could raise the county tax 6 cents — from 70 cents to 76 cents per $1,000. How much Richmond decides to provide for schools could affect that tax.
The supervisors conducted the hearing on the school budget, finding little opposition to what the School Board presented as a tight budget filled with vitally needed improvements.
The school budget represents some 65 percent of the county’s costs.
Residents speak
Among the residents who spoke was Camille Racer of Jackson District, who recalled how last year on a 96-degree day she found that her child was in a hot, darkened classroom watching a movie because it was “too hot to teach.”
“I don’t send my kids to school to watch movies,” she said. She urged air conditioning in the elementary school.
Nicole Hess, 17, a rising senior at Rappahannock High School, came to the hearing to urge the hiring of an additional music teacher.
