It is American countryside as at least the older of us remember it. But in Rappahannock County, the old times are deeper than the architecture and the openness, it’s the people too and the sort of gentler way of life. People wave even when they don’t know someone, take a minute for a courtly greeting before getting to the point, smile as they serve us at restaurants.
Rappahannock is a small county, almost 7,000 residents, and if we go to a school board meeting or a church service or the Fodderstack Race, pretty soon we start to recognize people and the world around us is not so remote. People seem to care a little bit more about one another as well.
First Lady Laura Bush recognized this on a wider scale after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, saying she found people in America seemed to come together in their concern for one another.
We don’t know if that’s true outside of Rappahannock, but we think the First Lady would be proud of people here both before 9/11 and after. The people of Rappahannock County care about one another.
