Incidentally, I can speak as one who has experienced harsh church discipline. I was once summoned before an elder’s court and excommunicated on the spot from a very large religious group for not paying my tithes in the timely manner I had agreed upon in writing before being baptized into the church.
My story did not appear in The Washington Post or any local newspaper, nor was the church’s action ever questioned. Nor should it have been. The fact is they had every right and prerogative to boot me out and label me anathema as I was derelict in the obligations I had solemnly pledged when becoming a member.
