That s why a Washington public relations expert, Monica Worth, has time to be the president of the Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department, or Amy Silver volunteers with Headwaters. It’s why people like Bette Mahoney works for the Relay for Life cancer fund-raiser, or Bev Hunter for RappFLOW, Jean Lillard for the Fodderstack Race, Maureen Harris for her volunteer work at the county library and historical society, Bob Landers for RLEP, Ann Spieker who in addition to running rescue calls, takes photos of school sports, and the Lions Club members. In today’s paper, we write about volunteer Gloria Allen and before that we wrote about the great work of the Washington Baptist Church’s Men’s Brotherhood program. The list goes on with volunteers who work our fire and rescue squads, our schools, our churches.
Sometime in the 198Qs, the word “volunteerism” was coined but it has been alive and well in Rappahannock County long before that. Part of this, we think, comes from the heritage of the county, from the time that people here had to do for themselves. If they wanted to fight fires or get to the hospital, they had to form fire companies and do it themselves.
We thank everyone who volunteers and we urge more people to get involved. There is plenty to do.
