I had a long chat with Sperryville native son Matt Payne this week. Matt grew up just down the road from me and although he lives and works in Richmond, he is still very much involved in our community.
Two to three days each week, Matt is here helping staff the volunteer squad as one of the two licensed EMT^ with the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad. Matt explained that although equipment and some operating funds come from state and county revenue plus their own fund-raising efforts, there is no paid staff. . .none.
