Budget vote on May 3
The supervisors will vote on the school’s 2004-2005 budget on May 3 at its regular monthly meeting.
The school budget estimate may automatically be lowered. The range hood for the cooking course has been funded by the supervisors separately; removing $35,000 and health insurance costs came in well under board estimates, which could save $40,000.
Air conditioning is not in this operating budget.
The School Board is also proposing some $3.5 million in capital improvements, including an auxiliary gymnasium which would be funded by bond sales.
McCarthy said in an interview that this could add several more cents on the tax rate.
Rappahannock is penalized by the state’s formula for state aid, which reduces assistance because of the high land values here.
The crucial number is how much of the School Board’s $10,388,841 budget request the state will pick up. School Superintendent Bob Chappell told the supervisors that if the state exceeds the estimates of state aid in his budget, he would recommend the additional money be used to reduce the local participation.
By comparison, the Fauquier Board of Supervisors adopted a $169 million budget last March 31 with a tax rate of 99-cents per $1,000.
McCarthy said that there could be “some push back” on the six-cent increase.
Rappahannock’s rural nature makes it impossible to suggest what an average family will pay.
