Rappahannock County Administrator John McCarthy said in an interview Monday that he will recommend a longevity pay arrangement for the deputies of several of the county’s Constitutional Officers, but is unlikely to back a $4,000 per person pay supplement.
McCarthy was asked by the Board of Supervisors in August to review whether seven county employees of Constitutional Officers should receive the same pay supplement and longevity allowances provided for the sheriff's deputies. He said the issue is still under review and he expects to make a recommendation in September. The cost to the county of the longevity pay for these seven employees is being studied.
McCarthy acknowledged that his recommendation may not satisfy the employees and the Board of Supervisors may choose to override him.
McCarthy said the $4,000 pay supplement provided on July 1 for sheriff’s deputies reflected the county’s desire to retain employees that it paid to send to training school and can lose to higher paying law enforcement jobs in nearby jurisdictions.
He said the other employees of Constitutional Officers did not have to be sent to a training school and were caught in a low pay scale because Virginia sets pay limits by the population and Rappahannock is a small county.
