With five of its eight players from Rappahannock County, the VA Xtreme team recently placed ninth in the under-15 American Athletic Union and Youth Basketball of America’s national tournament in Alexandria, Va.
Prior to the win at the national level, the girls brought home fourth place wins at both the regional and state level tournaments under the coaching of Waymond Edwards and Brooke Miller.
During the state match, VA Xtreme upset Boo Williams’ powerhouse Hampton Roads Red Tide—a taller, stronger, faster, and older team. Also during this tournament, Jenny Lyons of Manassas was named to the state All-Tournament team, averaging 14 points a game during the match.
Despite a loss to the New York Ballerz in the first round of the national tournament, VA Xtreme went on to defeat the Virginia state champions, Harrisonburg Heat. The girls continued their winning streak by eliminating the Stafford Falcons and the New River Valley Mustangs. This earned them the ninth place slot in the under-15 age group.
