Some of this new legislation promotes tougher restrictions on gang activity.
Kilgore said, “We’re seeing more and more signs of gang activity, as far south as Danville and west into Radford. Our office does a lot of partnering with Boys and Girls Clubs across the state, reinforcing our anti-gang message.
Education
Kilgore, who has two young children in the public school system, said he is keenly aware of the educational challenges that counties face.
“I believe that the state has an obligation to help districts,” said Kilgore. “Our bonds still have an Aaa rating, and we have the capacity to issue more to help local school systems with construction needs.”
While not undermining the importance of strong educational programs and challenging curriculum, Kilgore sees the value of learning in modem spaces.
“They need to be learning in new buildings with all the latest technologies.
“Some districts never get the dollars they need,” added Kilgore, who is submitting a proposal to the state General Assembly that will focus on school construction needs across the state.
Kilgore also applauded Virginia for initiating the Standards of Learning.
