Along with a cash prize, he was featured in a cover story of American Artist magazine. The contest was sponsored by the magazine, Jack Richeson and Company, manufacturers of Shiva casein paint, and the American Society of Casein Painters, in honor of the society’s 50th anniversary, Wilson said. The highly-technical article highlights both Wilson's talent as well as the deep commitment he makes to each piece of work.
“When a painting comes together very quickly, I am suspicious,” he is quoted as saying. “I’m so accustomed to going through a long process of carefully considering an idea, making preliminary sketches and compositional studies, and building up the surface over months, that I find it hard to accept a painting that comes without great effort.”
That sentiment is easy to understand when one considers the effort that Wilson has poured into his profession.
The second son of five in a military family, Wilson was bom outside of El Paso, Tbxas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilson. As a child, his family moved frequently and his parents worked to ensure that the children were exposed to cultural opportunities in every location.
“My parents always took us to museums, no matter where we lived. That was a real important thing for them,” he recalled.
Perhaps this exposure helped to encourage the young artist. Drawing and painting for as long as he can remember, Wilson developed a special friendship with his high school art teacher, Jack Johnson. When Wilson was just starting his career, it was Johnson, in fact, who invited him to participate in his first art show. The pair offered a two-man show in Williamsburg in 1978. “He’s been a great support for a long time,” Wilson said.
