Hearthstone School recently began a new program called “Sponsor a Student-Foster a Dream,” which pairs community sponsors with specific children receiving financial aid from Hearthstone. Rather than giving general donations to the school, these sponsors provide tuition assistance to a specific student, and may receive regular reports on the student’s school activities, progress and accomplishments. Sponsors will also be invited to school functions and special events, and are encouraged to become active members of the community. Additionally, since different families are in need of different amounts of aid, there is a donation amount, or percentage of sponsorship, which should fit any sponsor’s giving ability. Both sponsors and financial aid recipients may choose to remain anonymous. Sponsors who do not wish to remain anonymous will be listed on a special page of the school’s website, at www.hearthstoneschool.org.

adult GED
classes
have begun General educational development (GED) classes for adults in Rappahannock County have already begun; however, it is not too late to join and earn a GED in the evening. The program utilizes distance learning, a new forum for adults who find it impossible to attend class in a traditional classroom setting. All classes are held in the basement of the Rappahannock Library. An appointment with Regional Adult Education is required prior to enrollment in the GED program. In general, you must be 18 years old and out of school to take the GED. In some cases, exceptions are made for persons aged 16-17. This is also part of Governor Warner’s state initiative called “Race to GED.” The goal of the program is to contribute to the state’s economic development by doubling the number of Virginians passing the GED test by Dec. 31, 2005.
