McCarthy believes that the loyalty of the long-service employees should be recognized and will back a longevity formula.
But Sharon Dodson, a deputy revenue commissioner, said the problem is deeper than just longevity recognition. She said under the current pay formula, an employee who became a deputy treasurer two months ago makes more than she does. Dodson said she has over two decades of service to the county in a full time or part time capacity.
The issue arose last July when it was announced that the county would provide a $4,000 supplemental payment to some 25 male and female sheriff’s deputies. The pay would go not only to deputies on road patrol, but to dispatchers and jail matrons who work at headships
to students in college and lower schools and has a special fund for the families of the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
But the foundation recognized a special need in Virginia for a “college access program.”
It reported that “well over half the low-income students who score in the top quartile on standardized tests never set foot in a four year college.”
According to Cooke’s report, Virginia’s population graduates from high school at rates higher than the national average, but attends college at rates below the national average.
