A 33-year-old Rappahannock man careened off Fodderstack Road last Saturday afternoon, taking out part of a wood fence and smashing into the back of a parked SUV.
Raymond Kyle Thompson, of Flint Hill, was traveling westbound a little after 3 p.m. when he swerved off the road and onto private property at the intersection of Fodderstack Road and Monte Vista Lane, about a milt. and a half outside of Washington.
The cause of the crash remains unclear, though a police officer at the scene said that speed might have been a factor.
Washington fire and rescue personnel called for a helicopter, but it could not respond because of overcast skies, said Washington Fire Chief Ann Spieker. Spieker said Thompson was transported by ambulance to Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal and then flown to Winchester for treatment.
She said he was not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred and was thrown into the passenger side footwell. She did not know the extent of his injuries.
No one else was injured in the crash.
“The wheels squealed and you could hear metal crashing,” said Anna Smoot, who was about 20 feet away in her house when the crash occurred.
The SUV that the man hit is owned by Rappahannock schools, Smoot said. She said she uses it to transport students for the school system.
Officials with Rappahannock County Public Schools could not be reached for comment.
The impact of the crash pushed the SUV forward several feet, leaving tire tracks carved into the lawn where it was parked. The back of the vehicle was crushed and the rear window shattered. Thompson’s car, a small four-door Volkswagon, was towed away badly damaged. Virginia State Trooper Phillip Thomas, who reported to the crash, said another vehicle was damaged when it was hit by a flying board from the fence that, was struck.
