On Wednesday, Dec. 19, Shenandoah National Park implemented closures on the Skyline Drive due to damage caused by an ice storm. The ice storm began late Saturday, Dec. 15 and was followed on Sunday, Dec. 16, by a wind storm with gusts up to 50 miles per hour. The combination of ice up to Vi inch thick and strong winds has resulted in downed trees ahd limbs. Park staff began clean-up operations on Monday, Dec. 17.
