“Really don’t give up on scholarships,” said Paula Frietag, a freshman at Virginia Tech.
She said that she applied for about 30 scholarships but was turned down for each one. In a last-ditch effort she went for one last one, and she got it.
Some had better luck finding help.
Meagan Smith, also a freshman at Virginia Tech, received 12 scholarships. And Juan Tisera said his tuition and books at Lord Fairfax Community College were entirely covered by financial aid.
Tisera said he was working to support himself and lived in his own apartment. He said he puts in between 35 and 40 hours each week at his job, and takes nearly a full load of classes.
Not all of the alums had decided to pursue a four-year degree. Some had chosen trade school, pursuing a career as a technician or cosmetologist.
