The ordinance is designed to minimize any negative impacts development in tiie county may have on local water quality. The initiative grew out of the Clean Streams Initiative, which has been going on in the county for the past two years.
The county, with the help of the nonprofit Rappahannock Friends and Lovers of Our Watershed, has determined that one of the area’s most pressing environmental problems is stream degradation from runoff and erosion. Those problems are primarily caused by the poor planning and construction of long, private driveways, McCarthy said.
